Life for a young boy from Nadawa

We first saw Sunil during one of our workshops in Nadawa, at that time he was 6 months old and was running a temperature. His head was abnormally large and his eyes had the typical moon shape of hydrocephalic children. His mother asked us if she caused it by rubbing oil on his head. Such a sweet young mother tried to figure out why her child's head was growing so large. Quickly our thoughts fell on the young girl in Bagahi who died just four days before we returned to take her to Kathmandu. At one year her head was so large her grandmother had difficulty holding her. Knowing the possible future of Sunil, we acted moved fast. Within a week the family and I were on the bus to Kathmandu. The C scan showed "gross" hydrocephalus, however, the doctor still wanted to wait one month before operating. Dr. Thapa showed me how to measure Sunil's head, and then off the family went to Nadawa, an 8 hour bus ride. Three weeks later Raju and I were in Nadawa and measured Sunils head , another 1.5 cm in three weeks. With this news Dr. Thapa scheduled the operation, back to Kathmandu. Sunil is recovering, doing well. In a couple weeks he and his parents will take the ride to Nadawa once again. This time brings hope for a normal healthy life.
