The biosand filter shown on the left was designed by MIT (The Massachusetts Institute of Technology), FINNIDA and ENPHO.

The filter is made in the village by local craftsmen using local materials.   It removes bacteria and greater than 98% of the arsenic, with a flow rate of 25-30 liters per hour, sufficient flow for a large family.   Filters for Families will be installing 30 to 50 of these filters in Kunuwar village in 2004.   Peace Corps volunteer Naoim Odell is shown next to the filter. She is helping to coordinate the filter distribution.

This filter costs $20.
