The new arsenic biosand filter designed by MIT and Enpho is more efficient, easier to make, and easier to transport than the older cement filter.
A perforated basin with iron nails and brick-brack sits on top of the water, sand and gravel. Arsenic precipitates with the iron as a thin film on top of the sand. Once a month the sand and water can be stirred, then the arsenic film is removed. The iron arsenic precipitate is stable and can be discarded or used in bricks.
